Getting to Know Rochester: A Quick Guide to Neighborhoods

by Dustin Kanz

One of the best things about Rochester is how many different ways there are to live here. The right neighborhood depends on what you want from your day, so here is a quick tour of the options.

Downtown and around Mayo

If you want to walk to work, restaurants, and the Civic Center, downtown living puts you in the middle of it. Condos and loft-style homes sit within easy reach of the Mayo Clinic campus and the city's trail system.

Established southwest neighborhoods

The southwest side has long been a favorite for its mature trees, larger lots, and convenient access to shopping and schools. Homes here range from mid-century ranch styles to two-story homes, and many have been updated over the years.

Newer construction on the edges

If a newer build with an open floor plan and a three-car garage is what you are after, look to the growing areas on the north and northwest sides of the city. These neighborhoods often include newer schools, parks, and walking paths.

Small-town feel, short drive away

Towns like Byron, Stewartville, Kasson, and Eyota offer a quieter pace with a short commute into Rochester. They can be a good fit for buyers who want more land or a smaller community.

Spend time there before you decide

Drive through at different times of day, check the commute, and picture your normal week in each spot. It is the easiest way to tell which neighborhood actually feels like home.

The Kanz Team knows these areas street by street and is happy to point you toward the ones that match what you are looking for.
